03. Tá Mé ‘ Mo Shuí / I am Awake (song)

One of the great Donegal songs of male unrequited love with a haunting melody. Each verse in Irish is followed by a translation verse by Seán in English. (There are just 2 verses used in this version).

Tá mé ‘mo shuí ó d’éirigh an ghealach aréir
Ag cur teineadh síos faraor ‘s á fadú go géar
Tá bunadh an tí ‘na luí is tá mise liom féin
Tá na coiligh ag glaoch ‘s tá ‘n tír ina gcodladh ach mé.

I am awake since the rise of the moon last night
Tending the fire alone and keeping alight
The whole house is in bed but I sit here in deep misery
I hear the cocks crow but the wide world’s asleep except me.

Casadh bean sí damh thíos ag Lios Bhéal an Áth’
‘S d’fhiafraigh mé díthe an scaoilfeadh glais ar bith grá
‘Sé dúirt sí os íseal I mbriathra soineanta sámh
Nuair a théann sé fán chroí ní scaoilfear as é go brách.

I met with a fairy woman at Lios Béal above
I asked was there any release from the pains of love
She answered me softly in a voice with a sweet gentle sound:
When it grips round your heart forever and ever you’re bound!
